Flying from Zurich
Passengers flying from Zurich with Qatar Airways will have the pleasure of starting their journey from one of the most pleasant, efficient and clean airports in the world. With a fabulous Alpine backdrop and the ancient city of Zurich just 13km away, Zurich Airport is a primary European air transport hub of international importance. Linking one of the key financial centres of the continent to the rest of the world makes Zurich a popular departure point for business travellers, but whether you’re travelling on business or for pleasure Zurich Airport offers a first-class start to your journey.
Transportation and parking
As with most Swiss utilities, public transport is incredibly modern, clean and efficient. There is a Swiss Federal Railways station located under the Gate B area, with trains to and from central Zurich every 10 minutes. A slightly more sedate option is the tram, which takes 40 minutes from the centre of the city to the airport, or you could choose a bus or taxi, both of which offer short, 20-minute journey times from Zurich and the outlying towns and villages. Parking at the airport is reasonably good with six car parks offering around 1,000 spaces for both short and long-term stays. However, they do tend to fill up quite quickly.
Arriving in Zurich
Passengers flying from Zurich with Qatar Airways usually depart from the satellite Terminal E, which is reserved for non-Schengen international flights and is connected to the main terminal by an automated underground people-mover. However, some international flights also depart from Terminal B, so it is important to check the Departures boards on your arrival. Allow extra time - around an hour and a half to two hours before your flight is due to depart to check in and clear customs, as well as locating the correct departure point.
Facilities and amenities
Facilities are excellent at the airport, with an hour’s free internet browsing courtesy of numerous Wi-Fi ‘hotspots’ around the terminals. Fixed internet kiosks are also available, and again the first hour is free. Food lovers are well catered for, with a Swiss Chalet-style restaurant, numerous outlets and fast food vendors, an Italian restaurant and an Indian restaurant for something a little more exotic. Retail outlets include Duty Free and luxury shops selling Swiss watches and exquisite jewellery.
Arriving in Sydney
Despite what most people think, Sydney is not actually Australia’s capital, but is probably its most iconic and instantly recognisable one, thanks to exceptional monuments such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
Modern, thriving and continually expanding, Sydney is the powerhouse of Australia and one of the most vibrant cities on the Pacific Rim.
Book a flight to Sydney with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover that it’s also a centre for the arts, music and theatre, with an incredibly relaxed and laid-back atmosphere for such a large metropolis.
Warm and friendly people welcome visitors with open arms, and its business sector is innovative and progressive, making it an excellent destination for business travellers too.
Tourist attractions
Top of the list has to be the Sydney Opera House. It sits on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and adjacent to the Sydney central business district and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
It is in fact a collection of venues that host 1,500 performances every year, attracting over a million visitors from around the world. From opera to modern dance, theatre to mime, this is the cultural heart of the city.
Many of the city’s landmarks are clustered around the harbour, and an excellent and very relaxing way to see them is to take a ferry east from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo or Manly, or west under the Harbour Bridge towards Parramatta.
This will also give you a great view of the harbour itself.
The city is famous for its museums, and visitors can choose from the Australian Museum, which has extensive exhibits covering Australia’s unique flora and fauna, through to the interactive Powerhouse Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
To find out more about Australia’s First Nation people, head to the Royal National Park where you’ll find Aboriginal rock carvings, or take a guided interpretative walk at Berry Island.
